An award established by the founding chair of the Association of Dalit Women’s Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN) and social activist, Dr. Bishnu Maya Pariyar in coordination with ADWAN, a ‘Self-esteem Dignity Award’ was conferred to a writer, thinker, and social activist Sanjeev Karki and social campaigner Ram Kumari Das for their continuous campaigns against caste-based discrimination and untouchability.

The award, consisting of a purse of Rs 50,000 and a plaque of felicitation, was conferred to Karki and Das at a function organized in Kathmandu to celebrate the silver jubilee of ADWAN.

Karki has been writing against caste-based discrimination and untouchability widely practiced in Nepal and he has been active in creating awareness among the Dalit communities and movements for health education for the last decade. Similarly, a resident of Lahan Municipality of Siraha district Das is a social campaigner struggling against gender-based discrimination. She was forced to do child marriage and also a victim of domestic violence. Das has been working hard to ensure that other Dalit children and women won’t face a similar fate to the one she met.
